Solana is a public, permissionless, proof-of-stake (PoS) layer-1 blockchain that also uses proof of history (PoH). PoH provides a cryptographic record of time and ordering that helps the network organize transactions before consensus.

Solana is designed for high-throughput, low-latency execution, but a fixed transactions-per-second figure depends on workload and how votes or failed transactions are counted. Its native cryptocurrency is SOL, which is used to pay transaction fees and participate in staking that helps secure the network.
